the sands the smugglers ditched the plan, the boat and the pot. more than 1,000 pounds of it. from across the bay to around the world. the stories that matter on kpix 5 news this morning. >> got him. good morning everyone, i'm michelle griego. >> hi everyone, i'm frank mallicoat. it is 5:00. we're likely to have some dangerous hot weather in the bay area today. >> it's the second consecutive spare the air day. a combination of record high temperatures and low winds, and car exhaust are likely to make it another smoggy day. air quality officials say the best thing you can do is to drive less. >> we get some video from the sister station in sacramento showing the fire danger in this very hot weather. a neighbor shot video as flames spread from a field in elk grove towards her house. the embers set their shake roof on fire but crews managed to put the flames out before there was much damage but the weather is not helping fire at all. >> no. it's going to be elevated but doesn't look as bad.

usually if we get the really strong gusty offshore winds we get were concerned but today is not looking like that. the air quality going to suffer once again. but yeah we could see some record-breaking temperatures outside as high pressure dominated our weather today. and tomorrow i think going to be a hotter day with some of the temperatures near triple digits. so yeah heat advisory going up this afternoon. continuing into wednesday. as we're expecting some of the temperatures in the upper 80s and near 100 degrees. and it looks like that will continue through tomorrow with not much recovery overnight. as a matter of fact some very mild temperatures overnight. right now it is fairly mild outside. 61 degrees in san francisco. 59 in san jose. a cool 48 though in santa rosa. but this afternoon hot everywhere you go. 93 in san jose. 95 concord. into san francisco if it hits 89 that will be a record. about 92 in santa rosa. all right let's check on the roads now with liz. thank you lawrence and once again, a kcbs traffic alert in effect in san jose. these emergency road repairs are going to happen for most of

the day. pothole repair taking longer than first thought. the connector ramp pretty big one. northbound 880 to southbound 101 closed until 5:00 this morning. so look for your alternates right now we're not seeing any major delays along northbound 880. maybe just a few tapping the brake lights. you can get off at first street and then get back onto the freeway at southbound 10:00 1 using city streets or use the parkway. a live look outside and 880 in oakland in the east bay everything is great. northbound taillights are moving still at the speed limit out of heyward. some problem spot yesterday we had an accident southbound then an accident northbound. just a big old mess by the time the commute wrapped up but quick live look. richmond san rafael traffic moving very well. that's the latest traffic. back to you guys. all right liz thank you. today week long bike race covering hundreds of miles in california comes to the bay area. it's stage three of the amgen tour of california and including difficult climbs of two mountains. kpix 5 reporter kiet do is in

san jose with the preview of today's world class competition. kiet? >> reporter: yeah these riders have added easy the past couple of days with temperatures in the mid- to upper 80s. well today, it's forecasted to be blazing with nearly 11,000 -- feet of climbing in the hottest parts of the day. we got video of stage one in sacramento. where mark cavendish of england won that stage. he said one of the big challenges was the wind. but today promises to be brutal. so brutal in fact the race will have a hydration station where riders can stop and refresh themselves. teenage three starts right here at -- stage three starts here in lake cunningham park in east san jose by the way. the riders will go up mount hamilton and end up at mount diablo state park for a total of 108.5 miles and did i mention 10,900 feet of climbing? good luck to the riders, they'll be racing against wiggins he's the only man to win the tour de france and olympic medal in the same year.

that was back in 2012. the race starts today in san jose at 10:45 a.m. we're live in east san jose, kiet do, kpix 5. >> along the route of today's leg the chp will conduct rolling road closures until the competitors and the vehicles have passed. l.a. clippers' owner donald sterling is stirring up nor controversy -- more controversy. now he apologized during an interview with cnn insisted he's never been a racist and doesn't know why he said such stupid things, then, he had this to say about basketball legend magic johnson. >> what kind of a guy goes to every city and has sex with every girl. then he catches hiv and -- is that someone we want to -- respect and tell our kids about? i think he should be ashamed of himself. >> well, johnson later posted a comment after this week no more sterling talk. right now, police are asking for the public's help to try and find a missing 7-year- old girl from oakland.

kiannao' rear was last seen last night at her home on 73rd avenue at 6:00 p.m. she's about 4'0" tall with brown eyes and brown hair and wearing a black shirt, blue jeans and black tennis shoes, anyone with information is asked to contact oakland police. and more police officers are quitting in oakland unhappy about forced to work overtime now. the requirement began in october 2012 and won't end until next march. it has sapped already low morale and contributed to resignations. that is the police union is asking the department now to curb its quote addiction to overtime. the department is short some 300 officers. and it's expected to overspend its overtime budget this year by $14 million. new this morning, the search is on for a hit and run driver in richmond. kpix 5's mark kelly is live at the scene of last night's wreck, mark? >> reporter: michelle, i'm here at 23rd and lincoln streets in richmond. now two vehicles involved in

this hit and the run but this is still developing. we don't know how badly this morning those two victims were injured. here's the scene from 9:00 last night. you can see first responders were gently removing one of the victims from the car. he did have a neck brace on. this happened as i said about 9:00 last night. witnesses tell us the white ford pickup truck hit the toyota sedan. we're also told the driver in that truck was talking on his cell phone when the crash happened. but it was what happened next that was a surprise for witnesses. they say the driver got out of his truck, started running east away from the crash, leaving the two victims his own pickup truck, and the construction materials all inside. left all of that at the scene. now back here live at lincoln and 23rd street in richmond, you can see the scene is all cleaned up this morning. there were some detours last night. but it should be ready for the tuesday morning commute. live in richmond, mark kelly, kpix 5. and investigators are looking into a collision between a car and a muni

transit bus in advance. the crash happened -- san francisco. the crash happened around 9:00 last night gary boulevard and jones street. witnesses telling kpix 5 that a pizza delivery man was driving the black car. >> his car hit the bus. he was coming down too fast. and -- everybody was hitting sere -- sitting talking and looking at the bus. and i mean you could determine that the bus running -- either amber or red light. >> driver of the car was brought to the hospital by ambulance. nobody on the bus was injured. we have exclusive dramatic video of why caltrans made some quick changes near the golden gate bridge. plenty of drivers made the same dangerous move that caused that crash. even city buses. they crossed busy traffic lanes to avoid crossing the bridge. some new barriers are up to prevented that. a new temporary off ramp for the last san francisco exit. local, state and federal

authorities are investigating an apparent drug smuggling ring attempt in san mateo county that didn't go as planned. about 1,000 pounds of marijuana was found abandoned yesterday at the state beach and as kpix 5's betty ewe reports it's a sign that smugglers are expanding their business up here north. uck in the s , the smuggl e plan, the >> reporter: it looks well a -- like a well thought out plan. a huge fuel tank, plenty of extras, two engines and a waiting suv on land to deliver the drugs. but when the car got stuck in the sands, the smugglers ditched the plan the boat and the pot. more than 1,000 pounds of it. the 30-foot fishing boat is called a ponga is popular with mexican drug traffickers. because they can make long runs. go pretty fast, and hold a lot of drugs. the words on the side of the boat suggest it was manufactured in mexico. >> this is a northernmost land that we've had -- we've had at least two in san mateo county. two in -- santa cruz. and other four in monterey county. >> reporter: captain philip delano with the marine towing

company is getting used to getting these kinds of calls that are more typical along the southern california coast. >> so i've been in the business since --1990. so a long time. so they just finally got these things coming this far north and becoming an issue. the first one i ever did was last year. >> reporter: he's picked up five of these in the bay area in less than a year and finds the same things inside every time. and here's a look at what else they left behind. we're seeing a lot of rain gear on board. also a look at what they ate. there's a lot of instant lunch. mexican junk food. we're seeing granola bars talked -- tossed about the boat. hot dogs and even dishwashing soap. homeland security says the reason this kind of drug smuggling has increased in recent years up north is because they've busted so many operations down south. that's why more drug runners are willing to make the longer trips for a better shot at escaping. in san mateo county, betty yu, eyewitness news. >> and right now, there's no word on whether investigators

new video to try and determe hool girls developing news from nigeria. experts are studying some new video to try and determine where the kidnapped schoolgirls are now being held. the kidnappers released the video that appears to show about 100 girls there. the terrorist loaders claims -- leader claims the girls are safe and will be returned in exchange for militants being held in nigerian jails and u.s. officials say the next move is now up to nigeria's government. >> as you know nigeria is in the lead.

we are simply supporting their efforts. the united states' policy is to deny kidnappers the benefits of their criminal acts including ransoms or concessions. >> the united states has dozens of military pert nell and advisers in nigeria to help out along with surveillance aircraft and might add unmanned and unarmed drones to the effort as well. new suggests problems within one of -- video suggests problems within one of the most famous families. rapper jay z is caught on camera apparently being attacked by his sister-in-law solange knowles. it happened in new york last week. a bodyguard tries to hold her back while beyonce pretty much just stands there. it's not clear what triggered the fight and hotel management is furious that the security video was leaked and it promised to identify and punish whoever did it. well, there are changes coming in the way people call for help in an emergency. texting could soon replace talking. kpix 5's care care explains -- cate caugurian explains some

major mobile carriers will give use terse ability starting -- users the ability starting may 15th. >> once carriers put the new feature in place emergency respond centers still need to proper equipment, software and training. >> being involved in the accident? >> reporter: at this california patrol communications center, one of the state's busiest, operators answer about 4,000, 911 calls daily. and in the near future, they'll respond to 911 text messages too. >> starting on may 15th, the four major wireless carriers, at&t, verizon, sprint, and t- mobile are voluntarily making it possible to send a text message to emergency services. >> reporter: not everyone can text to 911 right away. 91 # centers in your area must be able to handle the text messages and many aren't ready. >> there is just a lot of tech flow logical hurdles underneath the surface that people don't think about all the time.

unlike calls, this text message is not given priority at this point. >> i it will make a significance difference for the hearing and speech impaired and in situations where placing a call is dangerous. operators say calls provide information that texts don't. >> we'll get it to the officers that are out there that say you know this person is -- you know a crying screaming is you know citizen. we're not able to get much because they're under a lot of stress. we have a location, this is what's going on that we can hear in the background. >> reporter: operators say callers rarely offer all the pertinent details initially. and need to be prodded for more information. which is why calling will remain the preferred way to contact 911 for now. the nation's top four wire legislation carriers say ed -- wireless carriers have agreed to provide the service two days from now. they hope to eventually provide 90% of the population with text to 911 features. >> when you test 911. will the dispatchers be able to pinpoint where you are? >> reporter: frank this is where texting 911 and calling 911 is different. typically we'll get your number

and location immediately and that's not the case with texting. this is why it's important if you use the future in the next few days to give an accurate address or location as quickly as possible. live in the newsroom, cate caugurian, kpix 5. >> thank you. it is 5:17 right now. let's get a check on traffic with elizabeth. glance guys and unfortunately we woke up to a traffic alert. we weren't expecting this problem in san jose. it's the emergency road repair that's going to unfortunately take most of the day. the connector from northbound 880 to southbound 101 will remain closed until 5:00 so start making alternate plans if you're heading that wayer planning on heading that way. you can actually at this point probably your best bet is to exit the freeway at the exit before southbound 101 at first and wind around city streets to get back on to the freeway. we are hearing better news now about highway 37. they've had these ongoing overnight road closures this week. both directions of highway 37 between 121 and sonoma boulevard. as you see there on the screen,

highway 37 is now back open. so that's much better news between vallejo and marin in show that counties. the east bay travel times still pretty good. so don't be surprised to hit a few brake lights already through the altamont pass as well. the nimitz up and down. northbound and southbound 880. right now everything is clear and the east shore is also good. and just a quick live look. here's a live look at oakland commute. near the oakland coliseum. that's your latest kcbs traffic. more on how many ways do you stay hot. you know it's definitely a beach day today if you can get there what a gorgeous day it's going to be. hot temperatures all around the bay area even along the coastline. unusually hot and maybe some records too. out the door it is very mild to din the day. this afternoon, these temperatures going to be well above the average. in fact we're going to see the numbers going to soar this afternoon. maybe to 25 degrees above the average. looks like 23 degrees above the average in oakland. 18 in san jose.

and 18 above the average in santa rosa. next couple of days we are going to see some very very hot temperatures. and some record heat. clear skies to mild conditions right now then sunny and hot it's a spare the air day and then possible records going to continue through tomorrow. that ridge of high pressure and the offshore winds continuing to blow and that air just sinks approaching the coastline. as it sinks it starts to heat up. even to the beaches going to get hot. the air quality does suffer though with that big ridge overhead. so it's going to be poor air quality into the east bay and also the santa clara valley. tarp state, you'll find hot temperatures too. 96 fresno and sacramento. and 84 degrees into monterey day. temperatures going to soar this afternoon. to 93 in san jose. about 94 in morgan hill. and 95 in los gatos. but at the beach you were into the 80s and a lot of 90s inland as well. then inside the bay, ad 0 degrees in -- 90-degrees in oakland. 89 if we hit that temperature that will be a record in san francisco and 88234 sausalito.

roads a lot of the road work is now clear from overnight and there's really no big delays over at the beige teleplay -- bay bridge toll plaza. good morning everyone, it's tuesday, may 13th. i'm michelle griego. >> hi everyone, i'm frank mallicoat. it's 5:30 and we have a hot tuesday. 90 plus all over bay area. here's lawrence with the forecast. >> maybe seen only 80s near the water's edge. so yeah we are looking at a heave wave now -- heat wave now as the big ridge of high pressure sitting overhead. that's going to crank up the temperatures and the air sinking approaching the coastline and that offshore wind blowing. so yes indeed. we are going to see a very hot day today. and tomorrow probably the peak of the heat. heat advisory going into effect this afternoon and continuing through wednesday. as we are going to see a lot of these temperatures approaching near triple digits in some of the interior valleys so you definitely want to check on the western and the old already -- children and the elderly. still outside right now, fairly mild start@day in many spot -- to the day in many spots. 61 degrees in san francisco. 59 in san jose and 57 degrees in livermore.

by the afternoon, these temperatures going to be something else if it hits 89 in san francisco today, that would be a record. 93 degrees in san jose. 95 in livermore. 94 in napa. and about 92 degrees in san rafael. kpix 5 reporter roberta gonzales is in santa clara. roberta? >> reporter: good morning there lawrence and good morning everyone. i will climb to any height to get the broadcast out on this very program right here. the news out. today we climbed 200 feet up on star tower. it is the highest observation deck of all northern california. and let me step out of the way so you can get a good view. official view is at 6:01 and currently 64 degrees here. but the winds have been blowing and so there's a little bit of a chill in the air and also clears out the atmosphere. the air quality is pretty decent in the early morning hours but take look at the scene yesterday. we take you to the eastern portion of our bay area. to dublin where that is one of

the areas that you will notice a comprise in the air quality -- compromise in the air quality when we see an extreme rise in temperatures. and that's because the pollutants get trapped very close to the surface because of the diablo mountain range. until you get the good breeze in there the air quality will be a little bit murr and i and that's whey -- murky and that's why they have issued a second spare the air day in a row for this week. so again it's a spare the air day. we are on top of the star tower. at great american here in the santa clara valley and also see some pretty moderate to poor air quality. but up at this level we are waking up a little breeze and we have roger ross here, he's a public relations director. thank you for letting me climb your tower so early in the morning. >> now, this is fun for us too. we don't get up here that often. >> reporter: tell me here at great america, we have temperatures flirting with triple digits today and tomorrow. what are you going to do to make sure everybody is cool mere. >> we recommend that everybody takes care of the sunscreen and plenty of hydration and you

>> i know we need to get you out there. >> you have to live a little liz come on. >> live it up. all right, let's go outside and show you what's going on. if you're crossing the golden gate bridge, it's actually a picture-perfect. i wanted to show you how lovely the shot is right now. the sun just -- well not quite coming up yet and traffic is flowing nicely as well. southbound heading into san francisco. but just again watch out. that last exit into san francisco slightly moved there and it's gosh been causing a lot of confusion for drivers. our reporter on the scene caught an accident happening there. live on the cameras. all right outside we go. and checking the road sensors the south bay now and that connector ramp remains closed northbound 880 to southbound 101. unfortunately this emergency road repair we hearing-impaired about this just about -- heard about this about to start the show this morning and the closure is in effect most of the day today. should be wrapping up just in time for the evening commute by about 5:00. but in the meantime you can get off at north first and we are seeing the delays through the pass and even through the livermore valley now.

speeds pick up a bit past vasco road. that's your latist traffic. back to you guys. right now police are asking for the public's help to try and find a missing 7-year-old girl from oakland. kyianna orear was last seen last night about 6:00 at her home on 73rd avenue. she's about 4'0" tall, brown eyes and bun hair. and -- brown hair. and she was last seen wearing a plaque shirt, blue -- black shirt, blue jeans and black tennis shoes. if you have any information about the young girl, call the oakland police. officials are under fire in oakland because of a dead dog. a viewer sent us this photo. it's the dog's body in front of the post office at 92nd and international in east oakland. we talked to oakland police and they told us someone reported the dog last tuesday. but it wasn't picked up until last night. opd says quote -- we apologize for the delayed response and are working diligently to address staffing shortages at the animal shelter. richmond police are trying to track down a driver involved in the crash.

happened about 9:00 last night 23rd street and lincoln avenue. witnesses say the driver of the white ford pickup was on the phone talking. the man got out of the pickup and then ran off. two people were injured but there's no word on their conditions this morning. well, san francisco is having a big time problem with its brand new emergency dispatch system. it's caused some $3.5 million to upgrade the system and it's supposed to improve communication between the 9 # 1 center, police and the fire department. but so far, the upgrade is actually making matters worse. >> they can't exactly obtain the information needed to respond to calls for service. the information is in bits and pieces and there's a piece of information appears and another piece down here. you have to scroll down and the information is not all consistent. >> the police and the fire departments are now back to square one using their own radios and pen and paper. emergency management officials say the issues are being addressed and overall emergency response has not been affected.

cbs news business analyst jill schlesinger is here to tell us the implication of the ailing population on -- aging population on long-term care. >> reporter: yeah, it's really over 100 years when you think about it. according to a recent "60 minutes" segment, since the start of the 20th century, we have increased life expectancy in this country by a remarkable 30 years. go back to 100ment we were living to 49. -- 1900. we were living to 9. today it's -- 49. today it's 79 and women and men above the age of 90. they are now the fastest growing segment of the u.s. population. >> well, jill, living long poses risks around health care, what should we know? >> reporter: you know about 70% of folks who are over the age of 65 will require some type of long-term care services during their lifetimes. more than 40% will need care in a nursing home.

the cost is pretty steep. the median annual cost for a private nursing home room is $87,600 and prices vary widely across the country. if you don't need a facility the national hourly median rate for a licensed home health aide is $20 an hour. >> what protections are there out there for seniors worried about that long-term care? >> reporter: i really have toppled fa size this because one -- to emphasize this because one of the big misconceptions about long-term care is that medicare coverage is available. it's not. medicare only addresses short- term skilled services or rehabilitative care. the only government provided insurance that provides long- term care coverage is medicaid. but remember, you've got to qualify and to do that you probably are going to have to deplete most of your assets. that leaves a big hole and a lot of people are trying to reach out and figuring out whether they need private long-
